Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategy director for communications has a tough task. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the advisor to strategic communications for the White House. Schlapp remained focused through the entire process, collaborating closely with the White House's committees for political and legislative affairs, policy shops, and wider communications operations to coordinate policies' implementation. Her focus so far has been on issues like school safety, opioids, infrastructure and trade. In her current position the director does not interact extensively with journalists. She gained attention after being named the candidate to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a comfortable position as White House strategist communications advisor. She's faced with the president, who acts as his own director of communications as well as numerous legal fights which could disrupt the administration's messaging strategy as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries who are caught in their own controversy. Schlapp has kept her eye on the target, and has been coordinating the implementation of policy with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and policy shop and broader communications. So far her main agenda has focused on issues like trade, school safety and opioids. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp is not in contact with many journalists. In March, her name was floated as a person who could replace Hope Hicks at the Communications Director job. It hasn't been an easy fight. Allies to Schlapp as well as Tony Sayegh who is another contender for the job started fighting in the media. Schlapp said that after that the Washington Examiner had published an article that had negative reviews of Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh in a private chat.
